Straterra is a norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor which stabilizes the levels of neurotransmitters like norepinephrine in the brain thereby improving one’s focus, self esteem, attention and concentration. Hence it is used to treat ADHD in children of more than 6 years, teenagers and adults.

The indications of Straterra are to treat patients of ADHD and to a lesser extent to treat depression. However Straterra is not a good antidepressant.

The contraindications of Straterra Lilly are congenital heart disease, hypertension, and irregular heartbeats generally called arrhythmias, coronary heart disease, and glaucoma, psychiatric disorders like mood swings, suicidal tendencies and bipolar illness. In pregnancy it is classified as a class C drug. Hence it should not be used in pregnancy as it may cause congenital anomalies in the fetus. If it has to be given in pregnancy and during lactation it may be given weighing the risk benefit ratio.

The side effects of Straterra are weight loss as it decreases the appetite, nausea and vomiting, irregularity in the rhythm of heart, priapism in children, urinary problems, menstrual problems, sexual problems, mood swings, suicidal tendencies, insomnia, abnormal dreams and thoughts and dryness of mouth.
